Rewriting the stories you tell yourself

The narratives we carry about who we are were often written by someone else — a parent, a teacher, a partner. Learning to author your own is therapeutic work in itself.

The story you tell yourself about who you are is mostly inherited. A line from a parent, a comment from a teacher, a moment with a partner — they accumulate into a self-concept you didn''t consciously choose.

Therapy is, in part, learning to notice those lines and decide which ones still belong.
